Welcome to Benson, Arizona.
Benson is a city located in Cochise County, Arizona, 45 miles east-southeast of Tucson. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 4,711. The city was founded in 1880 when the Southern Pacific Railroad came through. It was named after Judge William B. Benson, a friend of the president of the railroad. Benson serves as the western gateway to the scenic and historic attractions of Cochise County and has copyrighted the name "Home of Kartchner Caverns State Park". The 3,585-foot elevation creates a moderate climate, with summer highs around 96 degrees and winter days about 62 degrees. Located in the historical San Pedro Valley, it offers proximity to both Tucson (45 miles northwest) and Sierra Vista (30 miles south).
Cochise's Stronghold, the historic site in the Coronado National Forest, provides a fascinating day-trip from Benson. This is the rocky fortress where the great chief and his followers held out against the U.S. Cavalry and the drive provides some fine scenery in addition to the historical experience.
The Amerind Foundation in Texas Canyon, is just 12 miles east of town located on 2100 Amerind Drive. The foundation is an archeological museum and research center that preserves artifacts of the early Indian inhabitants of the region.
Gammons Gulch Ghost Town Movie Set - An 1890's Town and Mining Camp recreated like the Wild West really was, antique cars, movie memorabilia, nature path, and bird area. Kartchner Caverns State Park - Located on Hwy 90 in the Whetstone Mountains these unique caverns are the most pristine in the United States. The park just opened the Big Room to the public making the park that much more exciting.
